After several well-publicized incidents in bars, where untrained bouncers caused severe injuries to patrons, the City of Philadelphia passed an ordinance in 2011 to specifically deal with this problem. The ordinance, which became effective on April 19, 2011, requires bouncers to undergo training and to register with the City. Bars and nightclubs must also perform criminal background checks on bouncers that they hire.

Bars and nightclubs who fail to comply with this ordinance put their patrons at risk, and may face fines from the City of Philadelphia. A person who has been injured by a bouncer may also be able to bring a lawsuit against the bar or nightclub to recover for their injuries.
