Webster has not yet defined the term "pedtextrian."  However, the online dictionary Urban Dictionary defines it as “Someone who’s texting while walking, and is completely oblivious to what’s going on around them.”  Unfortunately, accidents involving "pedtextrians" are on the rise.

Researchers at Ohio State University have found the number of accidents resulting in emergency room visits for walking and texting has doubled every year since 2006 and will continue to double.  A related study, done at the University of Maryland Medical Center, looked at pedestrians who got hurt while wearing headphones. They found 116 deaths or injuries between 2004 and 2011, mostly to men younger than 30 in urban areas.  Though researchers and lawmakers have spent time and energy worrying about distracted driving, distracted walking has been a low priority.  However, it appears to be getting more attention as a real danger.
